The 49ers are approximately 18 million under the salary cap after figuring in the return of cornerback Carlos Rogers, along with the space cleared with the release Thursday of veteran cornerback Shawntae Spencer.Rogers counts 5.5 million against the 49ers' 2012 cap after signing a four-year, 29.3 million contract that includes a 5 million signing bonus, a league source told CSNBayArea.com.Rogers' deal includes a 2012 base salary of 3.9 million, along with annual 100,000 workout bonuses and up to 250,000 yearly in roster bonuses. Rogers' base salaries increase to 5.5 million in 2013, 6.25 million in 2014, and 7.25 million in 2015. The deal contains another 2 million total in possible incentives.Rogers' base salary this year is fully guaranteed, and 1.75 million of his 2013 salary is guaranteed. His entire 5.5 million salary for 2013 is guaranteed if Rogers remains on the roster on April 1, 2013.Spencer's release saves the 49ers 3.3 million on the 2012 cap.
The 49ers have plenty of room under the cap to re-sign quarterback Alex Smith and several other free agents, as well as their draft class. Although there has been no explanation for the delay in Smith's re-signing, both sides remain adamant the multi-year deal will get done. The 49ers are looking to add a free-agent wide receiver to join Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss. The 49ers have visited with Mario Manningham, Brandon Lloyd and Chaz Schilens. There is no indication whether the 49ers will pursue restricted free agent Mike Wallace, but the organization has the cap space to easily fit an offer sheet for the Pittsburgh receiver.
