Anquan Boldin becomes the latest 49ers wide receiver to try his luck with No. 81 since Terrell Owens' acrimonious exit from the organization following the 2003 season.

The 49ers announced on Friday that Boldin has been issued No. 81, the same number he wore with the Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens through the first 10 seasons of his NFL career.
Since T.O. left the 49ers, the No. 81 has not enjoyed much success with the 49ers. Of course, it probably has a little more to do with the players who wore the jersey than the jersey itself.
First-round flop Rashaun Woods was issued the No. 81 for the 2004 and '05 seasons. He caught seven passes as a rookie and never played again in an NFL regular-season game.
In 2006, the 49ers got some post-T.O. production from No. 81 when Antonio Bryant caught 40 passes for 733 yards and three touchdowns. But late in the season he was suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy. He did not play again for the 49ers.
Wide receiver Brandon Williams, a third-round draft pick in 2006, changed to No. 81 in 2007. The 49ers cut him a month into the 2007 season. Bryan Gilmore was signed, wore No. 81, and he caught seven passes in 10 games.
The 49ers spent big money on free agent wide receiver Brandon Jones in 2009. He responded with one catch for 18 yards, and that was it for him.
Braylon Edwards wore No. 81 in training camp of 2011 before switching to No. 17 at the start of the regular season. He caught 15 passes in nine games and was released late in the season.
Tight ends Sean Ryan, Justin Peelle and Garrett Celek have also worn No. 81 for the 49ers in recent seasons. Celek has been re-issued No. 88 to clear the way for Boldin to try his luck.
Here are the 49ers' new numbers:
