SANTA CLARA -- Running back Frank Gore was in full pads and participated in all the warmup drills Wednesday during the portion of 49ers practice that was open to the local media.Gore was observed hitting the blocking sled and doing change-of-direction drills. But Gore was clearly favoring his left ankle, which he sprained Sunday in the second quarter of the 49ers' 19-11 victory over the Washington Redskins.Gore will likely take part in limited work during practice. The extent of Gore's work day will be revealed when the 49ers must submit a participation report to the league office after practice.
Defensive end Ray McDonald returned to the practice field. He took part in individual work but it appeared as if he will not participate in team drills. McDonald has been sidelined since sustaining a left hamstring strain Oct. 30 against the Cleveland Browns.
