UPDATE (Friday, 3:00 p.m.) -- Tyrann Mathieu is traveling to San Francisco Friday night and will visit the 49ers on Saturday, according to an NFL.com report.

Cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, who was dismissed from LSU's program due to repeated drug infractions, is scheduled to visit the 49ers, a source told CSNBayArea.com on Friday.

Mathieu (5 foot 8 3/4, 186 pounds) is projected as a mid-round draft pick. He is viewed as a nickel back to play against the slot receiver while also being a punt returner. Both of those spots are possible needs for the 49ers.

In 2011, Mathieu finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting after averaging 17.2 yards on 25 punt returns. He scored two touchdowns. He also recorded two interceptions, forced six fumbles and recovered five fumbles.

He earned the nickname "The Honey Badger" at LSU due to his small stature and aggressive play on the field.

"I'm Tyrann right now, but if the 'Honey Badger' sticks, it sticks," Mathieu said at the NFL scouting combine. "But, right now, I'm focused on being Tyrann Mathieu."

Mathieu said he wanted teams to be able to trust him. He was arrested in October for marijuana possession. He was dismissed from the LSU team in August for failed drug tests.

"I'm not totally asking them (NFL teams) to trust me right now," Mathieu said. "What I have asked is for them to give me an opportunity to play the game. I've had a lot of time to reflect on it, especially without football. It's really given me a different outlook on life and it's just about being the right kind of person."

Mathieu and 49ers defensive backs coach Ed Donatell were seen talking regularly between drills at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis last month.

Due to his troubled past, Mathieu is expected to make a large number of visits to meet with NFL teams prior to the draft.
