The A's made a minor trade with Seattle, acquiring minor league third baseman Vinnie Catricala for a player to be named later or cash. Catricala has been placed on Oakland's 40-man roster -- there was a vacant spot -- and will report to double-A Midland.

Catricala, 24, had been on the Mariners' 40-man roster and playing for double-A Jackson, Miss., when he was designated for assignment on June 2. He was batting .253 with eight doubles, three home runs and 21 RBI in 48 games.

He was initially a 10th-round draft choice of the Mariners in 2009 out of Hawaii, where he played collegiately after graduating from Jesuit High in Carmichael, just outside of Sacramento.

In 2011, he had a total of 25 home runs, 106 RBI and 25 home runs in 133 games with Class A High Desert and double-A Jackson. Catricala has a career minor league batting average of .293 with 63 homers, 306 RBI and a .365 on-base percentage in 497 games.
