Raiders camp summary (83): Fans show up

Summary -- About 1,000 fans filled the bleachers and took in Friday afternoon's padded practice, cheering everything from stretching to big hits to calling defensive tackle Tommy Kelly the rapper Rick Ross. There was a festive atmosphere in the air and the team responded, even if the company line was to just practice.

"This was the exact same practice we would have had if no fans were here," said coach Dennis Allen. "We're focused on how we're going to get better as a football team. We don't worry about any of the outside influences. We're just worried about us."Offensive play of the day -- It was as pretty as it was deadly. Carson Palmer unleashed a 50-yard bomb down the left sideline, seemingly overthrowing Jacoby Ford. Until the speedy Ford ran under the ball and hauled it in at the goal line for a touchdown, tumbling over the goal line.Defensive play of the day -- Defensive tackle Jamie Cumbie, a longshot to make the team, plugged the hole on a Darren McFadden running play. And as McFadden shifted gears and changed direction, Cumbie reached in with one paw and stripped the ball loose. The crowed groaned. Cumbie received more than a few pats on the back.Injury report -- Tight end Richard Gordon (hip flexor), linebacker Aaron Curry (knee), cornerback Ron Bartell (hamstring), nose tackle Travis Ivey (conditioning) and punter Shane Lechler (left knee) did not practice, though Bartell was getting in quite a bit of work on a side field during practice.Notable -- Receiver Denarius Moore, who sat out Wednesday's practice after aggravating a strained hamstring suffered in June, was back in practice. He had his right calf taped up and it appeared there was a brace of some sort going up to his hamstring.Quotable -- "I'll say this, we're going to look at any options that are out there that we think can make us better. Whether or not we make any moves or not, that's to be determined. But we're not going to rule anything out," Allen said when asked if the Raiders had any mutual interest in free agent receiver Plaxico Burress.Eye on reps -- There was a noticeable gap between second- and third-team snaps between Matt Leinart and Terrelle Pryor at quarterback, behind starter Palmer, with Leinart getting most of the reps. In fact, you could say that Leinart actually looked sharper than Palmer for most of the practice. But that may have been because Leinart was going against second- and third-stringers himself.Extra work -- Darrius Heyward-Bey may not be an established No. 1 NFL wide receiver, but the fourth-year pro is working as if he is one. No one could ever question his work ethic and especially not when you see him working on catching the ball with his hands so often and so early with the JUGS machine.Coaching moment -- There were about 1,000 in the stands, the fans reminding the Raiders players to hustle and play hard and, yes, catch the ball with their hands.Next practice -- The Raiders return Saturday with another 2:20 p.m. practicein front of the fans.
