Through eight games this season Chris Wondolowski and the Earthquakes are just 1-4-3 for seven points. (USATI)

The less than capacity crowd of 9,388 in Santa Clara watched the Earthquakes tie Colorado 0-0 in a no score bore.

San Jose didn't have former Earthquake midfielder Marvin Chavez to contend with but neither did they have Benfica loan Yannick Djalo available for their own midfield. Both teams started USMNT World Cup striker hopefuls in Quakes' Chris Wondolowski and Rapids Edson Buddle.

San Jose started with some crisp, pacey passing finding some good movement down the wings. Atibe Harris and Khari Stephenson started to show some understanding in their passing. On 14 minutes, Edson Buddle came within inches of connecting with a low drive a  yard or two out, and the Rapids began to find routes through the San Jose defense. At the other end Alan Gordon showed he still has pace to reach an ambitious through ball from Jean-Baptiste Pierrazi but the resultant cross/shot found no Quake within ten yards of it.

San Jose managed a bit of a goal mouth scramble in the 23rd minute after Salinas ran the ball headlong into the Rapids defense at an acute angle but GK Clinton Irwin gathered the ball. On the next move Khari Stephenson jinked and twisted before firing a powerful shot  inches over the bar that drew a groan of anguish from the Quakes fans.

On 30 minutes Ty Hardin, who was increasingly moving forward out of defense to stamp some authority on the Quakes central midfield, headed straight at Irwin from 5 yards out. As the half drew to a close it seemed another night of San Jose failing to grab their half chances and take the lead.  Just before halftime Quakes defender Andreas Gorlitz was stretchered off after a tackle from Rapids forward Charles Eloundou that drew a yellow card. Gorlitz was replaced by Brandon Barklage and the half ended 0-0.

On 53 minutes, after a good tight passing move Alan Gordon missed a sitter sending the ball inches wide. In the 55th minute Eloundou gave Jon Busch a chance to show why he's one of the best goalkeepers in the league with a fine shot saved from close range.  Stephenson, Gordon, and Wondolowski combined on a good passing move but Wondo shot wide and the crowd groaned again. On 62nd minutes Rapids GK Irwin had his chance to show he's no slouch with the save of the game thus far from a fine drive from Quakes midfielder Stephenson.

In the 65th minute the Quakes began to explore the more the bizarre option as defender Victor Bernardez made a fine run forward, long pass to Alan Gordon and Bernardez almost connected with return ball.

In 77th minute Cordell Cato came on for Atiba Harris for San Jose, and Dillon Serna came on for Eloundu. In 78th minute Bernardez picked up a yellow card. With 3 minutes to go Wondolowski hit the post after a great through ball from Salinas.

The game ended 0-0.
