The Earthquakes' new stadium is expected to open for the 2015 MLS season.

Schuff Steel Company laid the first steel column in the Earthquakes' new stadium on Tuesday, president David Kaval announced on the team website.

The stadium is expected to open at the beginning of the 2015 MLS season.

The Quakes will play the first game in the newly built Levi's Stadium, which will house the San Francisco 49ers.

"It seems fitting that in our 40th anniversary year that the Quakes – the first pro sports team in the Silicon Valley – will christen the new modern day cathedral of sports venues in the Bay Area," Kaval said. "The fact that Levi’s Stadium as well as our new home is being built in the South Bay is the culmination of original Quakes owner Milan Mandaric’s vision of a vibrant sports culture here in Silicon Valley as opposed to San Francisco".
