Giants manager Bruce Bochy hospitalized after feeling ill

MIAMI -- The reeling Giants will take on Jose Fernandez and the Miami Marlins without their manager. Bruce Bochy was hospitalized Monday morning after feeling ill, and he'll miss the first game of a three-game series with the Marlins.

Bochy is said to be comfortably resting at the University of Miami hospital, where he was taken by trainer Dave Groeschner. Bochy wanted to be released in time to attend Monday's game but he is being held so he can be monitored overnight.

The Giants did not release any details about what exactly put Bochy in the hospital and he is expected to speak to reporters on Tuesday. The Giants are being cautious because Bochy is about 18 months removed from having two stents inserted in his heart, although acting manager Ron Wotus wouldn't confirm that the heart is the issue.

Wotus and Bochy exchanged a couple of texts about the lineup and a number of players had reached out via text message.

"I don't want to bother him," Wotus said. "He needs to get better and rest. I don't need to add anything to the situation. Just let him get better. Everything I heard and feel is we expect to see him tomorrow. I have no reason to think otherwise."

Bochy, who turned 61 in April, has had no known issues since being hospitalized last spring. When he had the stents inserted, his doctor told him he was in good shape and there were no additional concerns about his heart.

“I’ve got another 200,000 miles on me,” Bochy said at the time. ”I couldn’t feel better. It’s really incredible, this modern medicine. I’m good to go. I could have walked out of there, but they wouldn’t let me.”
