SAN FRANCISCO -- A day after getting blasted by the Colorado Rockies, the Giants added some firepower to their lineup.
Joe Panik returned after missing six games with a tight groin and Hunter Pence returned after sitting out one game with back tightness. The two additions mean a banged-up lineup is almost whole again; Angel Pagan remains sidelined by a hamstring strain and he'll likely miss this weekend's series.
The Giants would have likely had to make a roster move if Panik and Pagan were to miss the whole Rockies series, but they now won't be as short-handed. Instead, a move was made with the pitching staff. Vin Mazzaro was designated for assignment hours after allowing nine runs -- seven earned -- in one-third of an inning. Mazzaro's results left a bad taste, but Giants coaches were more dismayed after the game that he couldn't do anything to help save the bullpen after Matt Cain was knocked out in the fifth.

Albert Suarez, a 26-year-old right-hander, was added to the big league roster. His first appearance will be his MLB debut.
Suarez was in big league camp as a non-roster invitee but failed to make an immediate impact. He went to Triple-A and posted a 2.88 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in five games, including three starts. The Giants originally signed Suarez as a minor league free agent last November. He is known for his durability, and the Giants were impressed that he managed to compile 163 innings in Double-A last season.
