Matt Cain's sandwich-cutting mishap is going to cost him more than one start.

In a somewhat surprising move, the Giants placed Cain on the 15-day disabled list after Sunday's 4-1 win in Atlanta.

The club recalled right-handed reliever Jake Dunning, who will hop on a 6:00 a.m. flight in Albuquerque and should arrive in Pittsburgh shortly before gametime on Monday night.

Although it's not official, the Giants are expected to start Yusmeiro Petit in Cain's place on Monday against the Pirates.

The Giants are fortunate they didn't need to use Petit in relief during their three-game sweep of the Braves at Turner Field this weekend.

Cain cut his right index finger last Tuesday hours before he was scheduled to start against the San Diego Padres.

He threw a full bullpen session on Friday with a bandage covering the fingertip and was thought to be OK to return to the rotation. But the Giants are obviously not taking any chances with their longest-tenured player.

The move is retroactive is to April 24, meaning Cain could return to make a start on Saturday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
