The Giants optioned Jean Machi and recalled George Kontos from Fresno before Monday's series opener against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
On his birthday, June 12, Kontos was sent down in addition to being fined and suspended for throwing a pitch behind Starling Marte and hitting Andrew McCutchen in Pittsburgh. The 28-year-old right-hander was 2-1 with a 5.76 ERA in 29.2 innings before being demoted. Kontos is appealing the three-game suspension, making him available for Monday's game.
Machi, 31, allowed four runs, including two home runs, in 0.2 innings Sunday, which raised the right-hander's ERA from 2.52 to 3.86.
The roster move comes a day after the Giants optioned infielder Nick Noonan to make room for Pablo Sandoval's activation from the disabled list.
