SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Giants have signed former Kansas City Royals infielder/outfielder Mark Teahen to a minor league contract, club vice president Bobby Evans confirmed.

Teahen, 32, last appeared in the majors in 2011 when he split time with the White Sox and Blue Jays. The former St. Mary’s standout was a first-round pick of the A’s in 2002 but debuted with the Royals after being part of the three-team trade that sent Carlos Beltran to Houston.

Teahen, a career .264 hitter, spent 2012 with the Nationals’ Triple-A club. Last year, he bounced between independent ball and had brief Triple-A stops in the Diamondbacks and Rangers systems.

Evans said Teahen was a depth signing and would not receive an invitation to major league camp.

Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish first reported the signing.
