Giants trade Monell to Orioles for cash

The Giants traded catcher Johnny Monell to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations on Saturday, the team announced.

Monell, 27, was designated for assignment on Wednesday. He made nine plate appearances in eight games last season, collecting one hit, one RBI and two runs.

In seven seasons in the Giants farm system, the left-handed batter hit .267 with 77 home runs and a .351 on-base percentage.
