The Maxwell Football Club announced its watch lists for the 80th annual Maxwell Award and the 22nd annual Chuck Bednarik Award on Tuesday and two Bay Area universities are represented.

Stanford's Christian McCaffrey and Cal's Davis Webb were named to the Maxwell Award Watch List -- the honor given annually to the best player in college football.

Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List -- an honor given to the nation's top defensive player.

McCaffrey finished second in Heisman Award voting last season. He had a historic season with the Cardinal, breaking an FBS-record with 3,864 total yards -- including 2,019 on the ground and 645 through the air.

Webb is a graduate transfer who was previously on the Maxwell Award Watch List during his 2014 sophomore season with Texas Tech. He completed 459 passes for 5,557 yards with 46 touchdowns and 22 interceptions for a 138.4 passer efficiency rating in 23 games played and 14 starts over the last three seasons at Texas Tech from 2013-15. He will replace Jared Goff as the Cal starting quarterback after Goff went No. 1 in the NFL draft to the Los Angeles Rams.

Both preseason lists consist of 90 collegiate players.

Of the players listed for the Maxwell Award, 72 of them play either quarterback or running back -- 39 of the latter, 33 of the former. There are 16 wide receivers on the list and two tight ends.

Andrew Luck was the last Stanford player to win the Maxwell Award -- that was in 2011. He joined Jim Plunkett (1970) as Stanford recipients of the award.

Since its inception in 1995, no Stanford or Cal defensive player has ever won the Bednarik Award.
