Carondelet trails only Bishop O'Dowd on the Top 10 Bay Area girls hoops rankings.

We are almost mid-way through the regular season of basketball and the elite teams from both the Central Coast and North Coast Sections are starting to take their place in our top ten girls hoops rankings. I'll start with the number one team, the Bishop O'Dowd Dragons. Bishop O'Dowd entered the season as the top-ranked team in the nation. So far this year, the Dragons have dropped a total of three games-- two of them to out-of-state teams and one to a team from Southern California. Even though these losses have moved Bishop O' Dowd's nationwide ranking to fourteenth, the Dragons are still the most dominant squad in Northern California.

Ranked number two are the lady's from Carondelet. I have seen Carondelet play once this season and they are a very fast, talented team led by Natalie Romeo and Makenzie Cast. The Cougars have only lost two games all season, neither to Northern California squads. Carondelet is putting up big numbers averaging seventy-five points a game and on defense they are dominating with close to 18 steals.

The third ranked team is also from the North Coast Section: St. Mary's of Albany. St. Mary's is also putting up strong numbers with close to 60 points and 32 rebounds a game. One of their most impressive wins all season came against Long Beach Poly, one of Southern California's elite.

The No. 4 spot belongs to the girls from Archbishop Mitty. The Monarchs are the defending division two state champions and started this season off losing to Bishop O'Dowd and St. Mary's of Albany. Mitty has now entered league play and seems to have found its rhythm, most recently coming up with a big win against West Catholic rival St. Ignatius.

Rounding out the top five is the young team from Miramonte. The Matadors have only one senior, and primarily juniors and underclassmen. Miramonte has dropped one game so far and that was to Southern California powerhouse Windward. The Matadors most impressive win was just a couple weeks ago against local basketball haven Salesian.

There is still plenty of time for other teams to make a run into the top five, but for right now these teams are proving night after night why they are the top squads in the Bay Area.
