Snap count: Young Raiders defenders play extended stretch

Share

The Raiders were missing nine starters on offense during Saturday’s 20-10 preseason loss to Arizona. The defense was a bit more intact, with just edge rushers Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin sitting this one out.

The non-injury related absences made sense. The offense has plenty of established veterans who have already played together. The Raiders defense, by contrast, has some bonding to do.

The Raiders could rely on three rookie this season, with several other young players in key spots. Those players got some extra work against the Cardinals, with a group of young first-teamers carrying on after veterans bowed out.

That group included defensive linemen Eddie Vanderdoes and Mario Edwards Jr., linebackers Marquel Lee and Cory James and strong safety Karl Joseph. Those guys need some work, and got steady snaps in the exhibition opener.

Lee led that group with 40 snaps, as the Raiders continue to evaluate whether he can start at middle linebacker. He had six tackles and a fumble recovery. He allowed four receptions for 39 yards in six targets, and had a pass defensed.

Karl Joseph laid three tackles and a few big hits in 30 snaps and seemed ready for the regular season. He did, however, give up a touchdown catch.

Treyvon Hester had four tackles, including two sacks, in 33 snaps. LaTroy Lewis matched that sack total in 23 reps.

Safety Shalom Luani was the defensive leader with 43 snaps. Offensive lineman Ian Silberman played 54 on offense.
