Canucks defenseman Alex Edler received a three-game suspension, without pay, for an illegal check to the head on Sharks rookie Tomas Hertl, the league announced on Friday.
Late in the second period on Thursday, Edler made contact with Hertl’s head on an attempted hit along the boards in front of the player benches. Hertl’s helmet popped off, but he remained in the game. No penalty was called.
Edler, 27, is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the CBA. Based on his salary, he will forfeit $182,926.83, which goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
Todd McLellan was asked about the play after his team’s 4-1 win.
“No doubt there’s contact to the head. That’s obvious. It’s how it’ll be interpreted,” McLellan said.
Hertl is the NHL's leading goal scorer with six and is tied for the league lead in scoring with seven points.
Brad Stuart served the first of his three-game suspension on Thursday. He was suspended for an illegal check to the head of the Rangers’ Rick Nash on Tuesday.
