David Carr defends Derek's costly turnover on downs in Raiders' loss

Former NFL quarterback David Carr came to the defense of younger brother -- and Oakland Raiders QB -- Derek on Sunday, after the younger Carr's incompletion caused a costly turnover on downs in the Raiders' 20-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Trailing by two touchdowns with just over four minutes in the fourth quarter, Carr's Raiders faced a critical fourth down. After the snap, Carr faced immediate pressure, and he threw the ball into the ground in front of not-so-open running back Jalen Richard.

A fan tagged Derek's older brother in that clip on Twitter, and the former No. 1 overall draft pick defended his brother's decision-making.

The pass landed a couple yards in front of Richard, who appeared to stumble on his way out of the backfield. Derek Carr told reporters in his postgame press conference that the play was designed for Richard.

"[With] the look they gave us, Jalen's the guy," Carr said. "We've seen it on film work against them a whole bunch of times. We just didn't get it."

Sunday wasn't the first time this season that one of the Carrs publicly defended their brother. When The Athletic reported Derek Carr had lost the confidence of some of his teammates, Darren Carr disputed questions surrounding Derek's toughness.

With the loss, the Raiders fell to 1-8. It's their worst record after nine games in franchise history.
