Seattle's Rodríguez achieves impressive feat faster than Bonds

Seattle Mariners phenom Julio Rodríguez continues to make waves in his stellar rookie season.

After becoming the first Mariners player since Ichiro Suzuki (2001) to win back-to-back Rookie of the Month nods with his performances in both May and June, Rodríguez came for a Giants legend’s milestone with his home run during Monday’s game against the San Diego Padres.

Rodríguez’s two-run no-doubter to left field at Petco Park gave Seattle a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning and was his 15th of the year -- helping him surpass both Barry Bonds and Ellis Burks as the fastest player in MLB history to reach 15-plus home runs and 20-plus stolen bases.

The 21-year-old outfielder achieved the feat in just 81 games, and his 20th stolen base came against the Oakland A’s on July 2.

Burks, who spent time with several teams including the Giants across his 18-season career, reached the milestone in 82 games with the Boston Red Sox. Bonds did so in 90 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates and now stands at third on the list after Rodríguez’s home run.

The combination of power and speed is lethal, and Rodríguez has proven himself to be among the best to ever offer such duality in baseball.

Whether he can come close to joining the 300-300 club with Bonds remains to be seen.
