Warriors avoid Adams' ‘quick little monkeys' comment

OAKLAND – In an age where every athlete’s remark is scrutinized for possible malicious intent, and every athlete hears everything, the Warriors on Tuesday claimed ignorance in the wake of comments made by Oklahoma City’s Steven Adams.

In an interview after the Thunder’s 108-102 win in Game 1 Monday night, Adams described Warriors guards Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson as “quick little monkeys.”

Though the New Zealand native of Tongan-British descent quickly apologized for using language that could be perceived as racially insensitive, the Warriors declined to address it after practice.

“Nah, I haven’t heard it,” Draymond Green said before the questioner completed her sentence.

“I didn’t even know until just now,” coach Steve Kerr said. “I didn’t look at anything. I don’t have a comment on that.”

Adams apologized, saying he used “a poor choice of words” and “was just trying to express how difficult it was chasing those guys around.”

The Warriors surely were aware of it – social media never goes away – but chose to avoid the topic rather than wade into controversial waters. Feigning ignorance was, in this case, bliss.

Warriors forward Harrison Barnes took this feigning ignorance thing to another level. With Green on the cover of the latest Sports Illustrated, Barnes was reminded of the SI jinx.

He said he wasn’t aware of it.
