OAKLAND – Having played with and against the best, been one of the best and seen all the best, Jerry West is not easily impressed by what he sees in a basketball player. Once in a great while, though, the 77-year-old NBA legend falls in love.

His heart these days is dancing to the beat of Stephen Curry’s extraordinary game.

West believes Curry is the runaway MVP – and should be a unanimous choice.

“My guess is he won’t be, because other people are looking at other players and they probably think we have (the best roster),” West told CSNBayArea.com. “But trust me, this is not the most talent-laden team in the league. It’s not. It’s awfully good, but the way he plays the game, the way he approaches a game, I don’t know how he could not win the thing. I really don’t.

“But I don’t think he will be unanimous.”

Never in the history of the award as a player gotten every first-place vote. Curry is having a historically great season, for the Warriors, who posted a historically great record. Which raises the debate of Curry being a unanimous choice.

West, an adviser and executive board member of the Warriors, believes as strongly as he does largely because he links the Warriors’ astonishing success to the jaw-dropping performance and presence of Curry.

“He’s a great, great player,” West said after Curry scored 46 points in the season finale Wednesday night. “It’s just amazing, the kind of run they’ve had this year and when you win this many games, people tend to overlook some things. There’s a reason for all of these things, if you look at the heart and soul of something. And it is him. It is him.

“It would be an incredible honor, an incredible recognition of his ability and his desire to win, if it were unanimous. If he doesn’t win, well, you’re talking about a situation where you want to make sure you go out and review all of the ballots.”
