Namath counters Marshall: Jets should ‘certainly consider' Kap

The Jets are coming off their best season since 2010, and it's largely due to the defense, as well as a 31-touchdown campaign from Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick, however, is a 33-year-old free agent this offseason, which will force the New York front office to address the quarterback situation one way or the other.

Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Jets passer Joe Namath believes Gang Green should consider bringing in Colin Kaepernick if made available.

“You need more than one QB on a team,” Namath said on ESPN radio prior to the Super Bowl. “And if Kaepernick were available, I’d certainly consider bringing him in, yes.

“If you’ve got a chance at getting Kaepernick…Kaepernick has a long career ahead of him, and he’s only going to get better.”

Fitzpatrick led the Jets to a 10-6 record in 2015, while Kaepernick after eight starts was benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert.

Wideout Brandon Marshall, who led the Jets in receiving this past season, was outspoken about the situation, saying, “I don’t want Kaepernick.”

“I think Brandon’s still young,” Namath said about Marshall’s comments on Kaepernick. “I think he should consider that a little more.

“I know that Fitzpatrick did a wonderful job this year. And whenever I’ve asked to critique what I see, and what I feel, I know he would like to throw the ball more accurately if given the chance,” he added.

It's still unclear how Kaepernick fits into new 49ers head coach Chip Kelly's plan, but the quarterback would reportedly prefer to play for another team.

Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco with the Jets as his "preferred destination," according to a New York Daily News report.

The Jets are forbidden from recruiting Kaepernick, per the NFL Anti-Tampering Policy, which refers to "any interference by a member club with the employer-employee relationship of another club."
